Who Is Will?
Will Curtis, CCIM, CPM®
The first time I remember speaking in front of a group was in high school for Wednesday night Bible Study. Our Youth Pastor encouraged me to teach a lesson on something I had been studying. I remember being scared for my life but also feeling incredibly alive while doing it. At that point, I loved researching and sharing what I had learned. This passion led me to college to become a minister, where I certainly had many opportunities to speak repeatedly.
While that career path didn’t work out as planned, I enlisted in the Army a few years later and became a Cavalry Trooper in the legendary 1st Air Cav Brigade of the 1st Cavalry Division. Thinking all I would be doing was repairing the coolest helicopters in the world, I found myself drawn back to teaching. I taught additional courses and trained the Iraqi Military in small group settings. As my time in the military drew to a close, still oblivious to the fact that researching and presenting was my passion, I decided to pursue a Bachelor's in Business Administration in Real Estate Finance & Development from The University of Texas at San Antonio and enter the commercial real estate field.
In my real estate career, I started as an admin and quickly moved into construction management, leasing, and property management. I ended up working for the Fortune 500 REIT, Welltower, Inc. (NYSE WELL), as a Real Estate Manager and later as the Manager of Real Estate Transitions. While managing properties and handling the acquisition and disposition of transactions across North America, I continued to speak, present, and teach as part of my responsibilities. During this time, I was fortunate enough to earn both my Certified Property Manager (CPM) and CCIM designations.
After a beer (or two) with a college professor from my undergrad, I was encouraged to start teaching more often. Shortly after that, I wrote my first set of courses, which eventually became the CRE 101 course I still teach today.
I moved into a Leasing, Asset Management, and Economic Development role with Port San Antonio, the redevelopment of the former Kelley Air Force Base. There, I frequently taught and presented as part of my regular responsibilities while continuing to teach and speak on the side. During this time, I completed my MBA at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio.
A few months later, I received a call from someone I knew through our local CCIM Chapter Board of Directors. She asked if I could help mentor some agents she had but didn't have the capacity to support as she became the new Managing Director while still working on her business. About six months later, I was offered a full-time role as the Director of Commercial Education for Keller Williams City View. While there, I helped develop much of the training and mentorship programs used throughout the company, became a regular speaker for KW Commercial events, an instructor for Nucleus (KW Commercial’s New Agent Training), and conducted training for the local market center.
I then moved to become the Managing Director of Phyllis Browning Commercial, where I am growing and building their commercial division and teaching and developing agents to be “The Very Best.”
At this point in my speaking and education career, I have spoken before nearly every major residential brand and many commercial brokerages as well. I am Faculty for CCIM, The Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM), Texas REALTORS®, and an incoming adjunct professor at Trinity University. I have spoken at national and state conventions down to the local office level.
